H I S T O R Y

On April 19,1775, the American Revolutionary War began with the battles of Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts. The war continued for six long and bloody years. On July 4, 1776, representatives of the 13 States signed a Declaration of Independence. It was rejected by the British. The British actually offered peace to the "Patriots" or "Rebels" (as they were called depending on who was doing the talking) in exchange for withdrawing the Declaration. Despite the odds, the representatives refused to trade peace for liberty.

That July American Rebel army amounted to about 17,000 men. The quality and equipment of the troops were even more discouraging than their numbers: they were ill-disciplined, ill-armed, and for the most part completely inexperienced. They had little ammunition and practically no armor. They were not even sure that they were fighting for a common cause; instead they were distracted by provincial jealousies, prejudices, and animosities.

That same July, the British army in the Colonies numbered 30,000 men, many of them veterans, all of them excellently equipped, and provided with a fine train of artillery.

In August and September 1776, during the Battle of Brooklyn, Gowanus saw some of the most brutal fighting of the Revolutionary War. During the battle, the British killed 256 American soldiers, and wounded or captured another hundred. The British Army went on to take New York City and hold it for the duration of the war. But General George Washington retreated across the Gowanus Creek and on into Manhattan that ensured that the American Continental Army would live to fight another day.

The Empty Vessel Project is an action, art, and sustainability experiment. We salvaged EV, a WWII rescue boat, to create a space for re-imagining the post-industrial urban environment. We are a non-profit, volunteer-run organization and encourage participation on all levels.

EV is moored on Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal. The boat is our first project. We invite you to come join us on board to work and play.

We host work parties, movie nights, seminars, concerts, dinners, and workshops. The Empty Vessel is available to realize your dreams and schemes.

This newsletter is your guide. It appears in your in box each week, listing events and tracking changes. Can it be better? Contact pz@emptyvesselprojectREMOVEANTISPAMMEASURE.org with suggestions.
