THURSDAY, JUNE 22, 9pm ::: Stumptown Girls (A Screening) and Birds Nest (a live radio broadcst)
A note from Gretchen Hogue, STUMPTOWN's curator:
"Stumptown Girls is a 90-minute program of short films by female filmmakers from Portland, Oregon. The program highlights the DIY, collaborative spirit that this city has grown famous for, featuring an ecclectic selection of work ranging from Cat Solen’s music video for Bright Eyes to Vladimir’s handmade viewmaster movies; from Vanessa Renwick’s collaboration with Portland musician Tara Jane O’Neil to Shawna Ferreira’s psychedelic video creations. Stumptown Girls promises to be a night chock full of surprises, inspiration, and good old northwestern spunk!"
screening 9pm, $3-10 donation
and BIRD'S NEST
Simultaneously with the screening, Brooklyn's own Doomefish Theatre will be broadcasting the Bird's Nest radio program from EV. The program will include movie soundtracks from Stumptown, a radio play and who knows what else.
broadcast 10-12a

SATURDAY, JUNE 24, 9PM ::: Miss Rockaway Boat Party
Come dance with us onboard a World War II wooden Navy boat.
DJs Filastine (Seattle), Dirty Fingers (Black Label), and Aliqua (Chicken Hut) spin booty bass, disco, and fucked up global hip hop. The Quivering Mass (Tianna Kennedy, Zeke Healey, and Hannah Marcus) belt out rare Alan Lomax sea shanties for land lubbers, and Marygoround (New Orleans) lights up eye-popping flaming hula hoops.
Finish off a day's drinking with cheap cocktails slung by the Miss Rockaway Armada crew, answering questions about the most ambitious project of the summer: piloting junk rafts down the Mississippi River. Raffle tickets available for the skeptics.
Sunburns and tattered Mermaid Parade costumes encouraged.
9p; $5

Wood shavings, preferably the curly kind that come from a planer.
We need one (1) old working car stereo system with speakers to have fully solar powered audio. Got one?

Today we took our the buckets from our head directly into the Owl's Head sewage treatment plant and dumped them into the lines by hand. Dave Sharps of the Red Hook Waterfront Museum has been using this waste management system for over 20 years. He calls the buckets - little sealed packages of human waste and wood shavings - his Honey Buckets. We were honored to have him as our guide.
We were also a bit shocked by the process. We loaded the buckets into his van, suddenly appreciative of the importance of a well-fitting lid, and drove with our precarious load to the Bay Ridge waterfront. After passing through a high-security gate and giving our full names, we parked beside the screens which filter the non-organic matter out of the sewage stream. There, we opened each bucket by hand and dumped it directly down a 40 foot hole where our waste migled with the rest of South Brooklyn's. As I write this, that waste is being filtered until it is clean enough to put in the ocean.
We brought a respirator for this adventure. The veteran Mr. Sharps opted for a bandana over his face. He also brought a cooler full of ice and sparkling water. Smart man.
NOTE: Wood shavings make the buckets much nicer. If you have a wood shop, please bring us your shavings.

The Empty Vessel Project is an action, art, and sustainability experiment. We salvaged EV, a WWII rescue boat, to create a space for re-imagining the post-industrial urban environment. We are a non-profit, volunteer-run organization and encourage participation on all levels.
EV is moored on Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal. The boat is our first project. We invite you to come join us on board to work and play.
We host work parties, movie nights, seminars, concerts, dinners, and workshops. The Empty Vessel is available to realize your dreams and schemes.
